SAP lures top level managers from rivals

SAP has attracted senior level executives from Oracle Corp. and other software rivals, according to an announcement the company made Monday.

SAP said it hired nine executives from Oracle, PeopleSoft Inc., Quest Software Inc., Siebel Systems Inc. and BEA Systems Inc. over the past 18 months. The new hires include a group of development and marketing executives.

In March, SAP announced that it hired former Sun Microsystems executive George Paolini to boost its developer network. Paolini launched and directed a partner ecosystem initiative there and was credited with turning Java into the world's largest third-party developer community. At that time, SAP hinted that other top level executives from its rivals would follow.

The senior level executives will join Paolini in the product and technology group, headed by Shai Agassi, a member of the SAP executive board. In total, SAP said more than 200 employees were hired from competitive organizations in positions spanning all levels of the organization, from senior executive roles to sales, development and solution experts.

Eight of the most recent top level hires include:

  • Richard Campione, senior vice president of industry solutions marketing, served as group vice president and general manager, financial services and public sector business at Siebel Systems.

  • Mike Mayer, vice president of international development associations project development, worked for a decade at Oracle, where he served as senior director of international projects. Mayer was responsible for sales of projects funded by international funding agencies such as the World Bank Group, Asia Development Bank and the European Union.

  • Nimish Mehta, senior vice president of enterprise information management, also came from Siebel Systems, where he was group vice president of customer data integration. He also served more than a decade as senior vice president of Oracle, where he was also a member of the product management committee.

  • Doug Merritt, executive vice president and general manager for suite optimization and program office, was Quest Software's vice president and general manager of human capital management at PeopleSoft.

  • Dan Rosenberg, senior vice president of the user experience, product and technology group, worked for more than a decade at Oracle as vice president of research and development. He was responsible for interaction design, corporate look-and-feel standards and usability evaluation for all Oracle product lines.

  • Gordon Simpson, vice president of the applied technology, product and technology group, joins SAP from BEA Systems, where he was deputy chief technology officer.

  • Bob Stutz, senior vice president of the product and technology group, was hired from Siebel Systems, where he had overall responsibility for 21 vertical product lines and base horizontal products.

  • John Zepecki, vice president of SAP xApps products, served as vice president of development, enterprise performance management at PeopleSoft.
