Supermarket to offer self-checkout service

Supermarket chain Shaw's has ordered self-checkout systems for 30 of its stores. The systems will come from NCR.

One supermarket chain believes that customers would rather service themselves than wait in line. East Bridgewater,...

Mass.-based Shaw's Supermarkets Inc., which manages 185 Shaw's and Star Markets throughout six New England states, wants to give its customers this opportunity. But unlike Web self-service initiatives, this one translates into the physical world with self-checkout systems.

Shaw's has ordered self-checkout systems from Atlanta-based NCR Corp. for 30 of its remodeled Shaw's and Star Market stores. The chain first installed an NCR Self-Checkout system last year and received positive responses from customers, according to NCR. By February 2002, Shaw's expects to finish its installation of the self-checkout systems, which will include three self-checkout lanes in each store.

The supermarket chain chose the NCR A-Series Self-Checkout, which is the latest offering from NCR in the Self-Checkout line. The A-Series provides more space for larger purchases and can be modified to include a conveyor belt, which allows shoppers to unload groceries as they begin the self-checkout process.

The new self-checkout systems are part of Shaw's overall strategy to create a more state-of-the-art shopping environment. According to NCR, Shaw's found the NCR software flexible enough to allow customers to use the systems, regardless of the order size.
