PeopleSoft lends a hand to workers on the go

PeopleSoft Inc. is helping out field service techs and salespeople tired of using one hand to fumble through their PDAs for a phone number while using the other to place a call.

Today, the Pleasanton, Calif.-based software maker announced that its mobile CRM applications would support Microsoft's Pocket PC Phone Edition operating system. Users can touch a customer name listed in, say, the PeopleSoft Sales or PeopleSoft FieldService application to instantly dial that customer.

In addition to one-touch dialing, the platform offers auto-sensing of network availability to enable on-the-go synchronization, as well as custom synching. By setting user- and server-side definitions, individuals only synch data that's relevant to them.

Brad Wilson, PeopleSoft's vice president of CRM marketing, said research labs conducted the "Rip Van Winkle test" and found it took just six minutes to synchronize a year's worth of one user's data.

PeopleSoft will extend Pocket PC Phone Edition support for all of its mobile applications, which debuted as part of PeopleSoft 8.4 in March.

In addition, PeopleSoft will also deliver wireless Web support for Microsoft's Smartphone 2002 software. That will enable businesses to let their customers tap self-service components in PeopleSoft applications via their smart phones. For instance, Wilson said an electric company's customers could use their mobile phones to check on a complaint they filed.
