The twelve days of BI development

In the spirit of the holidays here are some basics of BI strategy set to the tune of the 12 days of Christmas.

In the spirit of the holidays here are some basics of BI strategy set to the tune of the 12 days of Christmas.

..

On the first day of BI development IT gave to me a detailed BI plan. (Planning is first step in insuring BI success.)

On the second day of BI development IT gave to me two data models. (Modeling is the second phase of planning, understanding the business processes will make future decisions easier.)

On the third day of BI development IT gave to me three query tools. (Not all query tools are made equal, you may need some variety to get the job done.)

On the fourth day of BI development IT gave to me four OLAP options. (Make sure you give yourself some options, you need to find the OLAP solution that is best for you.)

On the fifth day of BI development IT gave to me a five-month ETA. (Plan for at least six months to implement a solution.)

On the sixth day of BI development IT gave to me six tools reporting. (The greater the variety of reports, the more your users will use the data warehouse.)

On the seventh day of BI development IT gave to me seven servers a-humming. (Sometimes you can get away with using the hardware you already have, but a warehouse will need to access data often so higher performance might be needed.)

On the eighth day of BI development IT gave to me eight Gigs loading. (Loading the data from the transaction processing system to the data warehouse can take a substantial amount of time and effort.)

On the ninth day of BI development IT gave to me nine developers coding. (Web tools can make your warehouse both more accessible and easier to use.)

On the tenth day of BI development IT gave to me ten executives a-leaping. (ROI is the bottom line. Being able to show some results will insure the success of your project.)

On the eleventh day of BI development IT gave to me eleven users training. (The data warehouse can gather dust if the users don't know how to use it properly.)

On the twelfth day of BI development IT gave to me twelve market shares. (The information acquired with a BI solution can improve your overall business and hopefully help your company succeed in the New Year.)
